The General Secretary of the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey has lauded former President and the party’s flagbearer John Mahama for his transformative leadership in the country’s power and energy sectors.
In a statement via X on Friday, January 19, Fiifi Kwetey highlighted Mahama’s “visionary investments” that he said significantly boosted electricity generation and Ghana’s standing as a key energy player in West Africa under his administration from 2012 to 2016.
“Under the visionary leadership of HE John Mahama, Ghana experienced a transformative era marked by strategic investments in both the power, oil and gas sectors. This visionary approach not only harnessed its natural resources for robust economic growth but also brought about improved electricity generation and accessibility,” the post read in part.
Some key projects cited by the NDC chief scribe included extending power supply to over 2,861 rural communities to achieve a 76% national access rate. He said this significantly improved standards of living.
Others were the 2MW solar power plant in Navrongo, the 240,000MT Atuabo Gas Processing Plant which saves Ghana $500m annually, as well as oil projects like the FPSO John Atta Mills and Sankofa fields that boosted employment.
Mr. Kwetey concluded by praising Mahama’s “commitment to fostering a harmonious and sustainable energy landscape”, saying it showed his dedication to nation-building.
