Bright Botchway, the National Deputy Director of the Traders and Artisans Network (NDC-TAN), recently called on okada riders to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections.
Addressing a group of riders at Adade-Kakraba in Gomoa East yesterday, Botchway emphasized the commitment of the NDC’s leader, John Dramani Mahama, to creating numerous job opportunities for Ghana’s youth.
Botchway detailed Mahama’s ambitious plan to legalize okada riders’ operations and make transportation more affordable by establishing charging stations for electric bikes in every district. He explained that each station would require at least five workers to operate effectively. This includes two technicians responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting the charging equipment, and three attendants to handle customer service, assist with vehicle charging, manage payment transactions, and maintain station cleanliness and safety.
With 261 districts in Ghana, Botchway noted that building just 20 charging stations in each district could create over 26,100 jobs for the youth. “This conservative estimate could vary based on population density and economic activity, but even at this level, the job creation potential is substantial.” He also highlighted that these stations could operate 24/7 to serve both commuters and businesses.
Botchway urged okada riders to support the NDC, emphasizing the transformative impact of Mahama’s commitments. He also outlined additional measures proposed by Mahama’s administration to promote electric motorbikes, including subsidies and incentives, infrastructure development, supportive policies, and encouraging local manufacturing.
These initiatives, Botchway emphasized, would not only boost the adoption of electric motorbikes but also reduce pollution and provide sustainable transportation options for Ghana.
