The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has expressed their support for the proposed measures by John Dramani, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the importation of spare parts in Ghana.
They view the suggestion of a fixed rate for spare parts importation as a potential game-changer, emphasizing its role in combating corruption at the ports and protecting the investments of their members.
In a statement, Takyi Addo, the Head of Communications of the Association praised Mahama’s advocacy for banks to aid importers in clearing goods at the ports, foreseeing benefits for stable investments and sectoral growth.
“We commend former President Mahama’s foresight in advocating for banks to assist importers in paying to clear goods from the ports, as this will contribute to stable investments and sectoral expansion.”
Mr Addo added, “The Association believes that a fixed rate, as opposed to a flat rate, will mitigate the possibility of collusion among Customs officers at the port, ensuring a fair and transparent importation process. Mr Mahama promised to engage with all importers knowing that goods imported into the country come from various destinations across the world as part of the implementation of the fixed-rate
The Association added that Mahama’s engagement with embassies to address visa deposit issues and his decision to redevelop rather than relocate the Abossey Okai spare parts hub aligns with the interests of their members.
“Furthermore, the Association lauds the former President’s initiative to engage with all the embassies particularly the Korean Embassy which demands an amount of GHC 400,000 to GHC 600,000 be deposited into an account for visas. We also appreciate the decision not to relocate but rather redevelop the Abossey Okai spare parts hub. This aligns with the interests of our members, and we are optimistic that the redevelopment will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the hub.”
With elections approaching, the Association encourages a calm and informed approach among members to evaluate the proposals of political leaders, aiming for decisions that benefit the industry’s growth and prosperity.
“As we approach the general elections, the Association urges calm among its members. We acknowledge the importance of leadership in carefully evaluating the options presented by political leaders.”
