Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament Samuel Nartey George has invoked curses on all those involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey operations, due to the environmental damage caused.

In a social media post on Tuesday, September 24, Mr. George condemned “evil and wicked politicians, chiefs, clergy, and ordinary Ghanaians engaged in illegal mining.”

“The damage to ourselves and our children by evil and wicked politicians, chiefs, clergy, and ordinary Ghanaians engaged in illegal mining must be denounced by all. How much money would assuage your conscience?” quizzed the lawmaker.

The MP called for all galamsey operators to be “cursed even to the seventh generation for the harm and pain they are causing our beautiful nation.”

He described the situation as “just unacceptable and a shame on those who have the power to stop this crime but are complicit and turn a blind eye.”

The issue of illegal mining and its impact on the country has resurfaced in recent times following a recent warning by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

The GWCL has warned that the country may soon have to import drinking water as water bodies are being destroyed.

An exposé by the Fourth Estate investigative outlet, run by the Media Foundation for West Africa, has revealed that some known members of the ruling NPP, including its Ashanti regional chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako and Kumasi Mayor Sam Pyne, are involved.

Several civil society organizations and opinion leaders have been calling for a state of emergency and a blanket ban on all forms of small-scale mining, with Organized Labour threatening legal actions if the calls are not heeded by the end of September.
