Members of the Minority caucus on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament have defended their decision to boycott a stakeholder meeting on the pending Lithium Mining Agreement.

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor in July 2024, presented the agreement which is between the Government of Ghana and Barari DV and was subsequently referred to the Lands and Natural Resources Committee for consideration.

Ranking Member of the Committee, Alhassan Suhuyini, explained that the decision of the Minority members not to attend the meeting was due to the emergency sitting of Parliament at the Accra International Conference Center, and therefore, the outcome of the meeting will not be acknowledged.

“Because of the nature of today’s [Tuesday’s] sitting and the venue that has been chosen, consultation would have led to a rescheduling of the Committee meeting and that is what we had expected.

“But for some reason, the chairman of the committee unilaterally decided to go ahead with the meeting even though we were called to do business in the Chamber.

“And together with our leadership, we have decided to attach seriousness to the emergency recall… and to stay here and do business. And that is why you may realise later on that that committee meeting is made up of only members of the Majority.”
