The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Environment, Science, and Technology, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced plans to raise concerns about illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, during the parliamentary session on Tuesday, October 15.
According to him, the government’s continued silence on the issue is alarming and needs urgent attention.
Parliament is scheduled to begin the 5th meeting of its 4th session on October 15, 2024, at the Dome of the Accra International Conference Centre.
Mr Terlabi, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, emphasized that galamsey poses a significant threat to the country’s environment and water resources.
In a recent interview with Citi FM, Terlabi expressed disappointment with the government’s apparent lack of action, describing the situation as deeply concerning.
He stressed that illegal mining continues to devastate Ghana’s natural resources, and the government’s inaction is troubling.
Terlabi urged Parliament to address the growing issue, stating that the time to act decisively on galamsey is now, as the problem is affecting livelihoods, communities, and the environment across the country.
“When we get back, I have a couple of issues that I am going to raise on the floor of Parliament. It has to do with galamsey and the government’s reaction.
“I will make sure that whoever needs to respond will be brought to Parliament to come and respond to the reason why what we are seeing is going on.”
“The whole country is in arms against illegal mining and this government is stoned silent. Their consideration is only to win the election and I think that is not good.”
