A Member of Parliament for Builsa South has reacted to Ghana’s latest debt stock, underscoring the need for Ghanaian voters to kick out the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The lawmaker noted that this government has recklessly borrowed, mismanaged the resources of the country, and has nothing to show for the loans they contracted since taking over power in 2017.
Ghana’s public debt has reached a total of GH¢658.6 billion.
The amount is an increase of GH¢47.4 billion within the first two months of 2024.
This was contained in the Bank of Ghana May 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data, which disclosed this.
This would account for 62.7% of the gross domestic product (GDP) by February 2024.
The external debt stands at GH₵380 billion, which is equivalent to 36.1% of the GDP.
Reacting to this, Dr. Apaak asked Ghanaians to reject the NPP since a vote for the NPP would quadruple the current national debt.
He maintained that the government, through its unprecedented corrupt practices, nepotism, and mismanagement, has sent the economy into an abyss.
He also argued that the government has embarked on selective justice, misgoverned the country, and worsened the plight of the people.
Prior to the 2016 general elections, the then-running mate, who is now the Vice President, took on former President John Dramani Mahama and accused him of reckless borrowing.
“If we had spent the money borrowed, and that monies borrowed is some equivalent of $37 billion over 7 years, Now, can you imagine what $37 billion can do for an economy? $37 billion. I mean, it’s an amazing transformation that you can see. When we are talking about a record, you can always say, ‘We are going to do this, we are going to do that. The question is, what have you done? You’ve had seven years in government. What have you done? Your record should speak for itself.” The vice president at the time.
Dr. Apaak, in his call, questioned the Vice President over his comments about the plan by his government to not borrow at the time, yet the government has borrowed more than all administrations combined.
He stressed that the loans this government has borrowed since they took over have been mismanaged, misappropriated, and used for corrupt deals.
He has therefore charged Ghanaian voters to consider former President John Dramani Mahama since he is the best person to restore the country’s economy to stability and growth.
“Reject NPP, reject DMB[NADAA]. End nepotism, barefaced corruption, reckless borrowing, economic mismanagement, selective justice, misgovernance. A vote for DMB is a vote for NADAA. A vote for DMB is a vote to quadruple the current national debt. Vote for change! Vote for JDM! Vote for NDC! 24-hour economy, the game changer.”
