The National Peace Council (NPC) has commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for heeding its call to rejoin the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

In a statement released on Wednesday, January 31, the NPC expressed hope that the NDC’s commitment would contribute to strengthening Ghana’s democratic credentials.

The council extended its appreciation to the Electoral Commission, political parties, political actors, and stakeholders within the electoral management system for their support in promoting sustainable peace in Ghana.

The NPC urged all political stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and consensus building for free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections in 2024.

Additionally, it called on the public to recognize the slow process of peacebuilding and advocated for patience and support for the NPC and its partners in building a sustainable and peaceful country.

“The National Peace Council (NPC) would like to commend the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for heeding its appeal to return to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

“It will be recalled that after the 2020 elections, the National Democratic Congress decided not to attend the Inter-Party Advisory Committee meetings. This became a matter of concern to all Stakeholders in Ghana’s democratic and elections space.”

The NDC had initially chosen not to attend Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings after the 2020 elections, a decision that raised concerns among stakeholders in Ghana.

In response to the concerns raised during a Post-Elections Stakeholders’ workshop organised by the National Peace Council in 2021, the NPC engaged the NDC, the Electoral Commission and various stakeholders to facilitate the NDC’s return to IPAC.

During a stock-taking conference on December 14, 2023, organised by the NPC at Peduase as part of preparations for the 2024 elections, the NDC publicly committed to rejoining IPAC.

Following this commitment, the NDC participated in two recent IPAC meetings on January 22 and January 29, 2024.
