The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for swiftly responding to their demand for the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage to be registered.

At a press conference on May 16, the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, urged the commission to provide replacement voter ID cards free of charge to victims affected by the recent Akosombo Dam spillage.

Mr Kwetey emphasised the urgency of the matter and appealed for prompt and empathetic action from the EC to alleviate the burden faced by the affected individuals.

Subsequently, the EC affirmed that individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage will not incur any charges for the replacement of their voter ID cards.

Touching on this, Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande stated that the party is pleased with the EC’s response to their demands.

“One would have expected that such a decision would have been made long ago; it should not take the NDC to be the one calling on the Electoral Commission to do that,” he added.

Mr Gbande also lauded the police for their commitment to ensuring that security is maintained during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

“I think that so far most of the officers of the Electoral Commission have been very cooperative and very professional on the ground.

“With the way the police have conducted themselves, even though it is not the best, they have done so well. The IGP and the Commissioner need to be commended for that,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Haruna Mohammed, says the EC would have done the registration for the flood victims because it is their constitutional duty and not because of the NDC’s request.

“So if the EC is designing a project to ensure that those from the flood affected areas are registered then constitutionally they are delivering on their own mandate; whether you made a public statement or you don’t make a public statement,” he said.
