The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has engaged persons living with disabilities (PwDs) in the Northern Region on its manifesto proposals that touch on opportunities for PwDs in the country.

Some leading members of the NDC, during the event in Tamale, took turns to highlight and explain what the party would do for the disability community to improve their lives.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, speaking during the event, assured PWD that PwDs would have a place in the next government of the NDC.

He touched on the party’s track record in recognising PwDs, saying “Under President Mahama’s leadership, the NDC has achieved notable milestones including the historic cabinet appointment of a person with disabilities in the Fourth Republic, special grants for PWD entrepreneurs thereby creating jobs, dedicated funds through rural banking for entrepreneurs with disabilities, and increased allocation for persons with disabilities from three per cent to five per cent.”

He said “Looking ahead, the NDC promises to restore the District Assemblies Common Fund to 7.5% (up from 5%) and increase allocation for PwDs. PwDs will directly access these funds ensuring their needs are met.”

He said the NDC Flagbearer, Mr John Mahama, would interact with PwDs to outline his policies and programmes aimed at improving their lives including employing persons with sign language skills at all health facilities and provide free education up to the tertiary level for PwDs.

Mr Jacob Adongo Atule, National Disability Desk Campaign Coordinator, NDC, mentioned training and employment opportunities tailored to PwDs’ needs, increased funding for disability initiatives and inclusive representation in government appointments as some of the party’s manifesto proposals.

He, therefore, urged PwDs to join the NDC’s campaign to vote out the current government from power.

Madam Joyce Gyamfi, NDC National Campaign Coordinator for Women with Disabilities, reiterated that the next NDC government would establish the Women’s Development Bank to provide financial support to women with disabilities in every region and district.

Some of the PwDs, who attended the event, lauded the NDC for the recognition saying it showed the party’s commitment to address their concerns.
