Concerns have been raised by demographic projections from polls conducted across 16 regions of the country regarding the economic challenges facing Ghana. According to Global InfoAnalytics, these polls suggest that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama is positioned to win the December 2024 elections.

The research indicates that 63% of Ghanaians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, which could translate into electoral gains for Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), if the government shows improvements in economic performance.

Musah Dankwa, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, emphasized the credibility of their research, stating that it accurately reflects informed electoral opinions and is respected by academia and national corporate and governance institutions. He made these remarks during an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show hosted by Alex Nana Dogbey in Accra.

The findings also highlight significant support for Dr. Bawumia among first-time voters, signaling a shift in voter sentiment, particularly among younger demographics, as the 2024 election approaches.

In a media interview, Musah Dankwa disclosed that their survey, which sampled over 7,000 respondents, showed that a majority of young voters view Dr. Bawumia as the most suitable candidate to lead Ghana. He credited Dr. Bawumia’s recent nationwide campaign tour for boosting his popularity and rejuvenating the NPP.

Dankwa emphasized the pivotal role of first-time voters in the upcoming elections, noting, “This election will be about the vote of the young voters. Whoever wins their hearts and minds will win this election.”

Regarding the choice of running mate, Musah Dankwa expressed doubts about Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s ability to attract undecided voters. He questioned whether Opoku Prempeh has the charisma and effectiveness to extend beyond the NPP’s core supporters.

Dankwa suggested that Opoku Prempeh’s selection might be aimed more at mobilizing the existing NPP base rather than appealing to new voters. He pointed out that typically, running mates are chosen to attract floating voters, which he believes may not be the primary goal in this case.

Global InfoAnalytics is currently conducting further research in Accra to gauge voter sentiments in key constituencies regarding NAPO, the running mate selection.
