The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah has raised serious concerns regarding the Electoral Commission’s refusal to allow live coverage of a meeting scheduled for today at 2 pm between the two.
The meeting, which will take place at the Commission’s corporate office near the National Cathedral, has been the subject of intense scrutiny due to its potential implications for the upcoming 2024 elections.
In a statement on Dr Boamah’s Facebook wall, the NDC criticized the Electoral Commission’s decision to deny the request for live broadcast, describing it as a move against transparency.
The Director of Elections and IT for the NDC said, “This deliberate refusal flies in the face of transparency. Transparency is cardinal to the attainment of free, fair, and peaceful elections.”
He further emphasized that the Electoral Commission “cannot escape public scrutiny and forensic audit of the voters’ register.”
The NDC’s concerns come amid a perceived “loud silence” from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding alleged anomalies in the electoral process.
The NDC has accused the NPP of potentially benefiting from “overt and covert manipulation” of the voters’ register.
Additionally, the NDC expressed disappointment at what it called the “palpable purchased silence” of other institutions and personalities who would traditionally speak out on electoral issues.
The party has vowed not to tolerate what it describes as the “daylight advance robbery” of the 2024 elections.
Despite the Electoral Commission’s refusal, the NDC plans to provide its own coverage of the proceedings. “We shall serve as the broadcast outlets during and after the meeting,” stated the NDC, signaling its determination to maintain transparency in the electoral process.
