Eunice Leila Nketiah — Sekondi Constituency Treasurer, NDCThe Sekondi Constituency Treasurer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Eunice Leila Nketiah, has urged Ghanaian women to come out in their numbers and vote massively for the party in the upcoming elections so that they will benefit from the policies and programmes earmarked for their development.

She said the NDC, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, had not just paid lip service to supporting women to break the glass ceiling but had proven, with concrete action through the re-nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, that the NDC believes in the policy.

Speaking to this reporter in Sekondi, Ms Nketiah noted that the antecedent of the NDC, the PNDC, was the pioneer of fighting for women’s and children’s rights in the country and that a vote for NDC would culminate in a situation where the well-thought plans in the party’s manifesto would be implemented for all.

Singular decision

She explained that the singular decision to re-nominate Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate amid numerous equally qualified men was an indication of the determination, resolve and drive of former President Mahama to ensure that Ghanaian women have their place at the highest decision-making table.

With Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as the Vice-President, Ghanaian women and children are assured that their interest, concerns, feelings, future and welfare, as well as well-being, would be considered before every single decision would be taken by the government. This is because the second most important person in government is a woman,” Ms Nketiah added.

“When issues concerning women and children crop up, we know that our representative, who is also our mother and our teacher, will be just a heartbeat away from the President and we are doubly sure that in just a split second, the President will hear them.”

Role Model

She said there have been various discussions, as well as suggestions on how to ensure that women were given the opportunity to also lead the country. However, the singular decision by former President Mahama to re-appoint a female running mate was an indication that very soon the dream and vision of getting a female President was within reach.

“Many of us are encouraged. Our children and sisters and friends are also upbeat that with the grass ceiling crushed if we work hard with perseverance, we can also attain any political position in our party and even at the national and international level,” she added.
