Former Communications Minister Ekwow Spio-Garbrah says Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot take full credit for Ghana’s digital transformation without recognizing the groundwork he laid during his time in office.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Spio-Garbrah, who served under former President Rawlings, explained that he was the first Communications Minister and also chaired the National Communications Authority (NCA).

He stressed that he helped set up the foundations for digitalization in Ghana, long before it became a key focus.

“I’ve been talking about digitization for more than 20 years. What Bawumia is doing now is building on the structures we put in place,” he said.

He also pointed out that during his time, there were no corrupt deals involving public assets, unlike now, where government lands and assets are allegedly being sold.

Spio-Garbrah criticized former President Kufuor’s alleged sale of Ghana Airways and its assets, saying it contributed to the country’s current struggles.

While praising Bawumia for advancing digital initiatives, he emphasized that future leaders, like former President Mahama, will continue to build on the progress already made after “he wins the December 7 elections.”
