Former President John Dramani Mahama has slammed the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its record in the road sector.

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the ruling NPP claims to have constructed 12,000 kilometres of roads, which has turned out to be false.

He said despite these assertions, there are several roads in different parts of the country that are in a terrible state.

John Dramani Mahama addressing a gathering at Anyaa Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region.

The candidate, who is seeking a comeback after his defeat in 2016 and 2020, said despite the record of the NPP in the road sector, residents in the area have deplorable roads.

‘’President went to Parliament and claimed that the government has constructed 12,000 kilometres of roads, which means that when travelling from Accra via plane, it will lead you straight to Japan. If indeed they have chalked that record and they have constructed roads that can lead to Japan, then Anyaa Sowutuom residents should not be complaining about roads.’’

”Agape’s roads are in poor condition. When you visit Antieku and Ablekuma New Town, you will notice that all of the roads are in poor condition. NDC is the nation-builder, and we are the only party capable of embarking on initiatives that span decades. They attacked me and referred to my administration as incompetent, and I explained that the job was difficult. By the mercy of God, I was requested to leave and rest so that others could take over. We have seen their performance throughout the last eight years. If you believe the NPP will produce anything good or positive, you are kidding yourself.

He also accused the NPP of engaging in politics of lies to deceive Ghanaian voters, adding that the NDC does not engage in such deceptive politics.

”We maintain a commitment to integrity by refraining from making promises we are unable to fulfill, unlike our counterparts in the NPP who resort to deceitful tactics to gain power. Their approach is tantamount to sacrificing one’s principles for political gain. In contrast, the NDC prioritizes investment in projects that yield long-term benefits for Ghanaians, both present and future generations. Our focus is on enhancing the nation’s infrastructure, including access to clean water, electricity, quality healthcare, and education, thereby ensuring a lasting legacy of development.”
