The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that the failure of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in supporting the call for a forensic audit of the register is because of the rigging plot they have schemed together with the Electoral Commission (EC).

The party had petitioned the EC to conduct a forensic audit following discrepancies discovered in the register.

The petition was, however, declined by the electoral body on grounds that they were not new and efforts were underway to address them.

To further push home their demand for the audit, the party has announced plans to stage nationwide demonstrations on September 17, 2024, to protest the EC’s handling of discrepancies in the voter register.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Deputy Director of Elections, Mahdi Jibril, said it is not surprising that the NPP has found no challenge with the register since it forms part of their grand scheme in manipulating the outcome of the elections.

He lamented that the register that was printed by the EC and used during the exhibition exercise was different from what the NDC received.

“The NPP is the only party that has found no problem with the register even when someone has been arrested for tampering with the register or illegally transferring voters without their knowledge.

The NPP has remained adamant and is claiming the register is credible. But the NDC affirms that the register is fraught with irregularities. The NPP is not demanding a forensic audit because their strategy is to have this register used for the elections so they can rig the elections.,” he added.

Mr. Jibril maintained that if the EC does not have the intention to rig the elections, they will admit or accept that there was the need for an audit.

“In fact, if the EC has no intention of rigging the elections, then they have a responsibility to accept our proposal to audit the register to ensure a free, fair, transparent, and credible election. The EC recently denied that some of their devices were stolen, and yet we recently saw someone arrested with a device of the EC. They also told us the register was robust and credible but later told us they had discovered that an official had illegally transferred some votes.”
