The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and credible.

She emphasized that peace is easier to maintain when the electoral process is open and transparent, and when credible elections are conducted.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made these remarks while addressing a durbar of chiefs and people in Axim, Western Region, during this year’s Kundum festival.

She also urged leaders to continually promote peace and development.

“I wish that the chiefs and people of Axim will continue to ensure peace and tolerate each other’s views, especially as we prepare to elect committed and deserving people in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in December,” she said.

The NDC running mate expressed confidence that Ghanaians will elect leaders committed to serving the people’s interests in the December elections, urging the people of Axim to retain their current Member of Parliament, Kofi Arkoe Nokoe.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted key projects initiated by the previous NDC government in Axim, including the Axim Sea Defense Project, the asphalting of town roads in 2015, and the establishment of the Axim Girls Senior High School.

She also pledged that the NDC would work to restore the mini harbour project in Axim to its original plan.

On illegal mining, she expressed concern about its negative impact on livelihoods in Axim and surrounding areas, promising that an NDC government would not associate with or appoint individuals involved in illegal mining activities.

She commended the chiefs for their efforts to promote development and called for unity, tolerance, and peace as the 2024 elections approached.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also urged the youth to avoid being used as agents of violence during the election period, assuring them that the NDC is committed to peaceful elections.

She further called on the chiefs to lend their voices to ensure that the EC upholds the integrity of the election process.
