The Executive Director of the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), Peter Bismark Kwofie, has poohed the initiative by the government to provide GHC 500 each for Kayayei under the skills development and training programme.
The policy analyst says it is unfortunate that Kayayei will jubilate over the GHC500 given to them by the government in a state-sponsored initiative.
For him, if not for poverty, why should Kayayei jubilate over the amount?
He argued that what the head porters didn’t know was that the money given to them was their own money.
To him, this is just like clapping for an ATM to release your own money to you.
He asserted that the amount of money could only purchase four bags of cement.
Read his opinion below
Because of poverty, Head Porters (Kayayei) are jubilating because of GH500 ($33.3) is given them by the government after a completing a state-sponsored training for them.
They didn’t know the GH500 is their own money taken from them by the government and given to them back. They also didn’t know the training was paid for by them. It’s like applauding ???? the ATM for given back your money.
Finally, they didn’t know the GH500 can buy only 4 bags of cement and inflation has already consumed 50% of that money. Now they have GH250 which can take most of them back to the Northern region but can’t return with same.
