A Social Commentator and political analyst, Atik Mohammed has expressed disgust over the appointment of the Executive Secretary at the Presidency, Nana Asante Bediatuo, as an Ambassador–at-large.

Nana Asante Bediatuo, who started serving President Akufo-Addo as Executive Secretary from 2017, was on Monday, June 24, 2024, appointed as an Ambassador-at-Large.

As an Ambassador-at-large, Nana Asante Bediatuo is expected to play diplomatic roles on special missions where the President deem fit.

However, speaking on Peace FM’s ‘kokrokoo’ morning show on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Atik Mohammed questioned the rationale behind the appointment of Nana Asante Bediatuo when the country is about five months away from going to the polls.

“What on earth will make the President appoint his Executive Secretary as an Ambassador-at-large, six (6) months to an election? If the President actually listens to Ghanaians, he wouldn’t do what he has done by way of appointing an Ambassador-at–large,” he said.

“I am beginning to feel that the President is exhibiting some insensitivities to Ghanaians. When we have six months to elections, what at all is pushing the President to choose an Ambassador-at-large?”

The appointment of the Executive Secretary as an ambassador has raised questions within the public space.

Nana Asante Bediatuo, according to President Akufo-Addo, will still occupy the office as Executive Secretary while performing his ambassadorial obligations.

The ceremony also saw the President honour nine newly appointed diplomats.

He urged them to actively promote Ghana’s image and interests abroad as they work enviably.

“Your primary responsibility is to promote the image of Ghana as a stable, peaceful, and forward-looking country,” President Akufo-Addo said.

The group of appointees includes three High Commissioners and five Ambassadors, all entrusted with the critical task of representing Ghana in various countries and international organisations.
