Director of Elections for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Omane Boamah has insisted despite assurances from the Electoral Commission(EC), on the Voters’ Register being forensically audited by a third party with the involvement of all political parties and the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), he remains doubtful.
Dr Omane Boamah noted that the EC must accept the NDC’s demand for a forensic audit of the electoral roll to engender trust in the voters’ register and ensure peaceful credible General Elections come December 7, 2024
The NDC has cited several challenges with the voters’ register such as the presence of questionable names and illegal transfers of voters to different constituencies.
Dr Omane Boamah wondered why despite the readiness of development partners to help with the forensic audit of the EC is refusing to allow it to happen. He insisted that the EC cannot exclusively resolve the issues of the voters’ register given that the EC is the cause of the challenges.
“The very doctor who created the problem should not be the doctor that will resolve the problem…The UNDP is ready and willing to provide the support only if the Electoral Commission will write and request the support,” Dr. Boamah revealed.
Meanwhile, the EC has insisted that the issues raised by the NDC have already been addressed or are being addressed, and therefore, there is no need to have a forensic audit.
