A colorful memorial lecture was organized by the Atta Mills Heritage to commemorate the President John Evans Atta Mills Anniversary at the University of Ghana. The keynote speaker for the occasion was Kwesi Pratt, the editor of Insight Newspaper.
Pratt raised critical questions about the challenges facing the country, particularly its dependence on foreign imports despite having abundant agricultural land. He highlighted the soaring prices of goods and services, lamenting the burden on Ghanaians due to the weakening cedi against foreign currencies.
It is undeniable that the late Prof. Mills demonstrated steadfast and exemplary leadership during his presidency, steering Ghana towards governance reforms. He was notably free from tribalism, embodying both academia and socialism. His Christian values emphasized compassion and humility, eschewing personal accolades in academia, politics, and social life.
Today, Ghana needs leaders like him—selfless and capable of uniting the nation for development—especially during these challenging times in Ghana’s political history. Prof. Mills’ leadership talents extended across various sectors, including sports, leaving a lasting impact.
He staunchly opposed the PNDC’s privatization agenda, which he believed undermined democratic socialist values in Ghana. Despite facing health challenges, Prof. Mills introduced new perspectives and tackled political skepticism during his tenure as party leader.
