The Police has provided guidelines and rules for the street protest being organised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday at various areas across the country on the voters register.

The NDC had called for an independent forensic audit of the voters register saying that there were discrepancies in the provisional voters register exhibited by the Electoral Commission ahead of Election 2024.

But the Electoral Commission in response has said the call by the NDC for an independent forensic audit of the register was “misguided” and “premature”.

It said the commission itself is an independent body and besides, the public exhibition of the provisional voters register (PVR) was part of the process to identify and correct errors, mistakes or discrepancies if any exists in the register.

It said the discrepancies the NDC has talked about and had a meeting with EC over it, were not “new” as the Commission itself had detected same issues and has taken steps to resolve them.

It said the law provides remedies for such discrepancies to be corrected under the Constitutional Instrument for registration of voters, C.I. 91, which has been updated by C.I. 126, and that the law envisaged that discrepancies may arise following a registration exercise and  therefore provided remedies for fixing them.

But the NDC has insisted on a nationwide protest on Tuesday (September 17, 2024) insisting that the EC should address the issues of irregularities through an independent forensic audit and re-exhibit the register.

Following that, the police and the NDC have agreed on the route to take for the various protests in all 16 regional capitals.

The police has stressed on the need for peaceful and lawful conduct during the protests, emphasising that demonstrators must follow designated routes and timelines.

The Police made the routes to be used for the protest known at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 16.

The police also highlighted the importance of collaboration with organisers to ensure public safety, urging participants to refrain from violence or property destruction.

They cautioned against destruction to property which may lead to surcharges as security personnel will be deployed across all demonstration routes to maintain order.
