Deputy Minority Whip of Parliament Ahmed Ibrahim has slammed the members of the Majority caucus for abandoning their parliamentary duties to campaign with their presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament on Friday, July 12, 2024, the Banda MP said the MPs cannot abandon their work and follow the Vice President and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, around on their campaign trail.

He stated that the MPs cannot abandon their duties and follow their candidate when they have unfinished business in the House.

He said that because the administration’s four-year mandate has not ended, the MPs cannot embark on a mission to break the eight-year jinx while still required to attend parliament.

“As I speak to you, the flag bearer is in the north, and the running akte is in the south campaigning. The MPs are following you. Instead of coming to sit here to do government work, meanwhile, you still have four months and one job to do in government. Who should do that work? You are thinking of breaking the eight and not solving the problems. Mr. Speaker, this is serious,”  he lamented.

He told the flag bearer and his running mate to release the MPs to come to parliament and work, or they would be forced to invoke Articles 102 and 104, raising the quorum.

The MP underscored the need for the constitution to be respected, warning that if this is not addressed, the minority would also leave parliamentary business and embark on their campaigns.
