Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has challenged the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to prove his commitment to protecting Ghanaian culture by compelling President Akufo-Addo to assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values (Anti-LGBTQ+) Bill.

His comments come in response to Dr Bawumia’s pledge to protect Ghanaian culture and family values if elected president.

Mr Bedzrah argued that since Dr Bawumia is currently the vice president of the country and therefore has a say in how the economy should be run, promising to preserve Ghanaian culture when elected while he can speak to President Akufo-Addo to sign the bill now does not sit well.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on August 19, he said “If he is man enough to rule this country he should be able to tell his boss that ‘look my boss, this is our culture value, please sign this bill’.”

He argued that the country does not need anyone to protect the cultural values but laws to prevent individuals from abusing Ghanaian values.

The legislator argued that enacting the law supersedes a manifesto promise of protection.

As such, Mr Bedzrah stressed that if Dr Bawumia wanted to protect family values, he would advise the president to sign the family values bill rather than hide behind words.

“This thing of hiding behind words that is being done now it is like he running away from all the acts that the president has done and coming out to say that when I become a president, I will do this and that.

“It doesn’t work there. I mean, he can not run away from any act that has been committed by the current regime,” he said.
