Deputy Director of Elections for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, says the Electoral Commission (EC) has been badly exposed in their own statement concerning the matters relating to the voters’ register.

In its response to the petition submitted to it by the NDC, the EC said that it has largely resolved all the discrepancies identified in the PVR. The Commission achieved this in 2020 and will do it again in 2024.

It therefore extended an invitation to the NDC to the discussion table, as they believe it will afford us the opportunity to demonstrate to you that the discrepancies detected in the PVR have been resolved.

But Mr. Jibril says the response from the EC has exposed them for their inconsistencies.

He said the EC had informed Ghanaians that the NDC failed to provide any evidence to support their discrepancies in the register, but in responding to their call for a forensic audit, the EC disclosed that it had generally resolved the issues.

‘’The EC is claiming to have resolved the concerns we had raised, and so we should come so they will prove to us that they have done it. But was it not the same EC that claimed we failed to submit any evidence supporting our allegations of discrepancies detected? This shows the EC lied to Ghanaians that we failed to give them any evidence.’’

He said the decision by the EC to exhibit the corrected register online is questionable and without any legal basis, saying ‘’the EC has quoted different CIs to support their response, but they have not quoted any law that will support their decision to exhibit the register online. So what legal basis are they going to use in this exercise?’’

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that the goal of the NDC is to demand a credible and robust register, which the EC has failed to do.

Mahdi Jibril said the EC cannot be trusted and its failure to accept responsibility and accept the call for audit to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election.
