The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has asserted that the ongoing issues surrounding the voter registration process stand to benefit the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This, he noted is the reason they are against an audit of the register.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, September 19, Mr Gyamfi claimed that the NPP is complicit in alleged illegal transfers of votes, which he says are being carried out with the involvement of the Electoral Commission (EC).

“What do you expect from the beneficiaries of the manipulations of the voter’s register? What is going on clearly stands to benefit the ruling NPP” Mr Gyamfi said in response to the NPP’s news conference on Thursday that opposed the demand for a forensic audit.

“They [NPP] are collaborators with the Electoral Commission who has illegally engaged in voter transfers that they were not supposed to do and have manipulated the voter’s register leading to the mess without complaining about it so obviously, they [NPP] would be happy,” he claimed.

He further accused the NPP of intentionally turning the issue into a political football to deflect scrutiny from the EC’s actions.

According to him, the NPP’s refusal to support a forensic audit of the register ahead of the 2024 elections is part of this strategy.

This follows a press conference by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, who criticised the NDC’s call for a forensic audit of the register.

Mr Frimpong Kodua described the demand as “hypocritical and mischievous,” asserting that it is a deliberate attempt to incite tension ahead of the December 2024 elections.

He dismissed the need for an audit, suggesting that the NDC is only pushing for it because they fear electoral defeat.

Mr Gyamfi, however, urged the media not to be swayed by the NPP’s tactics, insisting that an audit is necessary to ensure fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
