Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the next NDC government will implement a comprehensive National Apprenticeship Program focused on addressing youth unemployment and enhancing skills among the younger population.
During his “Building Ghana We Want Tour” in the Ashanti Region, Mahama highlighted the proposed initiative, which would be spearheaded by local Assemblies.
The program aims to support artisans in engaging and employing young people, fostering skill development and creating job opportunities.
Speaking to the residents of New Edubiase, Mahama outlined the party’s commitment to tackling youth unemployment, particularly for individuals outside the formal education system.
He emphasized the importance of skill enhancement, stating, “The next NDC government aims to establish a National Apprenticeship Program, with District Assemblies leading the implementation.
“They will oversee the registration of artisanal business owners and attach the young people with them. Local Assemblies will allocate funding to mentors who will guide these young individuals.”
Mahama assured the public that the NDC’s focus on skill development would open up opportunities in various artisanal crafts, such as hairdressing and seamstressing.
Addressing cocoa farmers in the same region, Mahama revealed additional plans for the growth of the cocoa sector.
He affirmed the NDC’s commitment to building on existing initiatives and introducing new measures to support cocoa farmers.
“The next NDC government will continue previous initiatives to improve the cocoa sector. Additionally, we will provide factories in cocoa-growing areas to ensure we add value to the cocoa beans instead of exporting them in their raw form.
“This will go a long way to help cocoa farmers, and the factories will also help provide jobs to the youth in these areas,” Mahama stated.
