Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu has stated that President Akufo-Addo needs to acknowledge that the current methods for combating corruption are insufficient.

According to him, the president must confront the reality that the strategies being used to fight corruption have not been effective.

Mr Senanu illustrated his point by comparing the situation of taking a child to the hospital four times without any improvement, which suggests that there is a fundamental issue with the approach being used.

During the Annual Ghana Bar Association Conference in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo stated that he had taken steps to tackle corruption, claiming that the opposition party is deliberately attempting to portray his government, family, and himself as corrupt for political gain.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Senanu said, “The President should understand that, yes, it’s not that there has been no effort, but substantively, what has been deployed has not been effective in addressing the issue. That is why our CPI [Corruption Perception Index] shows that we have stagnated at 43 for four continuous years. Stagnation means there has been no progress, and the situation we find ourselves in has not been effective or sufficient. Much more needs to be deployed. It has not been strategic.”

He noted that some measures being discussed, such as asset declaration, need to be more effective, as lengthy verification processes and the lack of publication render it an inadequate tool.

Mr Senanu said that issues like unexplained wealth and the regulation of political parties must be addressed, especially during this election year, as these are often where the problems begin.

“And I think that the political parties need to look at themselves critically. They do not seem to be delivering on the mandate and aspirations of Ghanaians, and there seem to be internal problems that are spilling over into what we are seeing in the public domain. So, I think that the President is not keeping it real. I don’t know whether he writes his scripts himself or who writes it. They are not doing a favour to Ghana.”
