The National Tenants Union has cautioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to stop ‘peddling lies’ about the National Rental Assistance Scheme.

The Union says contrary to the much touted success of the scheme, the opposite was the reality.

The General Secretary of the Union, Mr. Fredrick Opoku, disclosed that the scheme has failed and could not meet the expected outcome.

He has therefore warned the Vice President, who is also the presidential candidate for the NPP, to desist from making false claims about the scheme, or they would have no option to counter his assertions and make Ghanaians see through ‘’his lies’’.

Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr. Opoku said that although the idea of the scheme was launched to make accommodation more accessible, affordable, and convenient by taking away the unfair burden faced by lower-income households and the youth across the country of multi-year rent advance payments demanded by landlords, the initiative has failed.

”We caution Dr. Bawumia against spreading misinformation regarding the Rental Assistance Scheme. The scheme’s failure is evident, contradicting his claims of success. His statements have disappointed us, leading to our call for restraint. Continued assertions will prompt a detailed rebuttal. Our intention is not to disrespect but to correct the narrative. With alleged expenditures over 20 million Ghana cedis as of February and no records released, Dr. Bawumia’s claims at the manifesto launch seem unfounded. The scheme’s lack of transparency and assistance to deserving applicants undermines his assertions, suggesting political expediency.

The scheme’s beneficiaries remain unpublished. Under these circumstances, how can Bawumia credibly claim at the manifesto launch that the program has been successful? Many applicants were unsuccessful, and deserving individuals did not receive assistance. Bawumia’s continued assertions to the contrary constitute dishonesty; the scheme is essentially a political ploy and propaganda, he declared.
