The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has urged voters to vote for the NDC if they are keen on reversing the hardships impacting on all Ghanaians.
She observed that worsening economic conditions must motivate Ghanaians to exercise their franchise to put the economy on the path of prosperity again, urging the electorate to vote for change.
She said the harsh economic realities required Ghanaians to commit to turning out massively to vote the New Patriotic Party out of power.
Campaign tour
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang hit the ground running to garner support in her home region, the Central Region, for the NDC (for the 2024 polls).
She began her three-day regional tour of the region at Mfuom in the Upper Denkyira East Constituency, walking through the streets of the town and engaging in a one-on-one campaign with residents, where hundreds of enthusiastic supporters and residents followed her through the town rolling their arms to signify it was time to change government.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s tour also took her and the entourage comprising national, regional and constituency officials to Dunkwa Bebianiha where she addressed a mini durbar of chiefs and residents.
She also introduced the parliamentary candidate for the area, Emelia Ankomah and appealed to them to vote for her.
24-hour economy
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged manufacturing companies and traders to prepare for the 24-hour economy envisioned by the next NDC government.
She explained that the 24-hour economy policy was a key component of the agenda by the NDC to rescue and reset the country from the effects of economic mismanagement by the present government.
While providing benefits to companies in the form of tax waivers, reduced tariff rates and increased productivity, she said the job shift system would create more employment and financial dependence for workers and households.
“The NDC will restore hope and rebuild the economy to meet the aspirations of Ghanaians,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said it was the duty of the government to provide the necessary infrastructure that would facilitate the rapid development of areas such as Dunkwa and Denkyira.
She reminded the chiefs that all the major infrastructure projects such as roads, health centres and schools were provided under the previous NDC governments, and therefore urged them to vote massively for the NDC to continue its good works in the area. “We have done it before, and you can trust us to do it again for you,” she said.
Women’s bank
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the proposed Women’s Development Bank would give small loans at no interest rates or minimum interests to support small and medium women businesses to survive and thrive to better the lives of women.
She further stated that the bank would target one million women for support to ease the economic burden.
Her remarks on the 24-hour economy were in response to concerns raised by the chief of Denkyira Bibianiha, Nana Appiah Kubi, about the high rate of joblessness and poverty in the area, which has created a hopeless situation for the youth in the area.
Nana Appiah Kubi prayed for success for the NDC in the upcoming elections, and requested that the rehabilitation of the health facility in the area be prioritised when the NDC regained power.
