The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to act responsibly.

According to him, the EC’s current actions are neither serving Ghana’s best interests nor benefiting the Commission itself.

The NDC initiated a nationwide demonstration in protest of the EC’s refusal to allow a forensic audit of the voter register.

The party has issued a one-week ultimatum for the EC to respond to their request.

Speaking on JoyNews, Top Story, Mr Gyamfi said, “It is our expectation that they will do the needful because, clearly, the intransigence they are displaying is not in the interest of Ghana, and it is not even in their own interest.”

“Look, Ghana is the only country we have. Those who came before us—our forebearers—made sacrifices for the peace we enjoy today. The least the Jean Mensa-led electoral commission can do is preserve the peace we are enjoying. Elections are important because they are the platform through which the people choose their leaders.”

He stated that if the EC does not respond to their demands within the one-week ultimatum, the NDC will not resort to violence, as they are law-abiding citizens.

The NDC Communication Officer said instead, they will exercise their constitutional right to protest.

Mr Gyamfi added that the party will continue protesting, not just in regional capitals, but at all district offices of the EC, to reinforce their message.

“If you have done nothing wrong if you have not manipulated the register, and if the register is as accurate as they claim and they have nothing to hide, why are they running away from a simple audit?”
