National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has questioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent promises to abolish certain taxes, raising concerns about the Vice President’s role in the numerous taxes implemented by this same government.
Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ program, Asiedu Nketia revealed that he refused to listen to Dr. Bawumia’s speech on his vision for the country he claimed was full of lies and deceit.
According to him, he got infuriated and switched to the AFCON match between Nigeria and South Africa, which he deemed more “important” and “entertaining.”
Asiedu Nketia asserted that he later listened to a recorded version of Dr. Bawumia’s speech and concluded that the vice president’s promises echoed campaign messages previously advocated by former President John Dramani Mahama.
“I was watching football and did not get time to listen to the vice president, but I can tell you that he has made our work easier because he has reiterated John Mahama’s campaign message.
“I recorded it because Nigeria’s match was more important to me than what Bawumia had to say,” Asiedu Nketia explained.
He went on to express skepticism about Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to scrapping certain taxes, questioning where the vice president was when his government was implementing those taxes he is seeking to abolish.
Asiedu Nketia remarked, “The vice president seems to be deceiving himself because the very things the NDC spoke about and fought against are the very things he says he is going to abolish or scrap when he is elected president, and I wonder to ask myself where was he when his government was implementing those policies.”
Dr. Bawumia, during his address at the University of Professional Studies, Auditorium (UPSA) on February 7, 2024, pledged to abolish taxes such as the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), Betting Tax, Emission Levy, and others if elected president.
