Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has kicked against the complete scrapping of the 10% betting tax currently implemented by the Ghana Revenue Authority.

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama on Monday, August 12, announced that his next government will abolish the betting tax during an engagement with the youth in Accra.

Speaking to Joy News today, Franklin Cudjoe said although times are hard and the youth are going through tough times, scrapping the 10% betting tax is not the best idea.

He proposed that John Dramani Mahama should consider revising the betting tax downwards instead.

“Despite the economic challenges, I do not agree that we should completely remove taxes on the winning cash of betting. He can revise the tax downwards.

“Some of the boys were complaining and I understood them because they argue that ‘you are not creating jobs for me as a government, the little joy I get from betting, you tax the joy away’. Of course, we don’t want that, but I think there has to be a middle ground,” Franklin Cudjoe said.

The IMANI Africa president continued, “John Mahama should have said ‘Look, taxes must be implemented to generate revenue for the country; however, the rate will be revised’.”

According to Franklin Cudjoe, the promise of completely scrapping that 10% betting tax is more of a political talk.
