The Youth Wing of the opposition NDC has condemned the government’s failure to address the crisis of unemployed nurses and midwives, accusing authorities of neglecting the country’s healthcare needs.
In a statement issued ahead of nationwide protests planned by nursing groups, NDC National Youth Organizer George Opare Addo slammed the “blatant disregard” shown by the government towards the plight of graduate nurses and midwives.
“It is utterly disgraceful that despite years of training and qualification, our graduate nurses and midwives are left languishing in unemployment, while the healthcare sector suffers from severe understaffing,” Opare Addo said.
According to the NDC youth, the situation has left nurses “in a state of despair, with their talents wasted and their livelihoods neglected” due to “government’s incompetence and indifference.”
The criticism comes as the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association (GUNMA) and the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association prepare to hold demonstrations on Tuesday, April 16, to demand action.
“Graduate Nurses and Midwives are tired of waiting for employment opportunities after 3-4 years of staying home. We believe it’s time for action,” GUNMA said in a statement inviting members to the protest.
The NDC Youth Wing has thrown its “full support” behind the planned protests, urging the government to “address the grievances of our nurses and midwives” as a “matter of urgency.”
They warned that failing to do so would further damage healthcare workers’ “trust and confidence” in the government’s ability to prioritize their needs.
