The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of plagiarizing their manifesto promise to provide free tertiary education to persons with disabilities (PWDs).
In a press statement released on May 14, 2024, the NDC Disability Desk stated, that the NPP’s promise to provide free tertiary education to PWDs is a stolen idea from their 2020 manifesto.
The NDC noted that their 2020 publicly available manifesto had promised to provide free tertiary education to PWDs, but the NPP government, which was aware of this promise, had failed to fulfil it.
“In line with Section 18 of the Disability Act, 2016 (Act175), the NDC in its 2020 Manifesto on page 74 categorically stated that “the next NDC Government will provide free tertiary education for Persons with Disabilities.
Instead, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, had recently announced the same promise as if it was his own idea, without giving credit to the NDC,” it noted.
The NDC Disability Desk also criticized the NPP government for its lack of credibility and trustworthiness when it comes to manifesto promises made to PWDs.
They pointed out that the NPP’s 2016 manifesto had promised to ensure that children with special needs were not left behind, but this promise had not been fulfilled after nearly eight years in office.
The NDC also reminded the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the inhumane treatment meted out to PWDs who were manning toll booths across the country, which had brought untold hardship to them.
The NDC Disability Desk, however, advised Dr Bawumia to fulfil the NPP’s 2016 manifesto promise to PWDs within the next seven months before the 2024 elections and to present original ideas instead of plagiarized ones.
They also stated that PWDs would not vote for the NPP in the upcoming elections, especially when the NDC had presented them with the opportunity of being fully included in a 24-hour economy policy.
